Understand website ownership
Every website in Art Schema has a single owner. The website owner is the account responsible for the website and has the highest level of administrative control.
Website ownership is different from website user roles. While Administrators, Editors, and Viewers can help manage different aspects of a website, the owner remains ultimately responsible for the website and can perform ownership-specific actions that are not available to other users.
What is website ownership?
Website ownership identifies the account that has primary responsibility for a website.
Ownership is assigned when a website is created and remains with that account until it is transferred to another eligible user.
A website can have only one owner at any given time.
Website owner responsibilities
The website owner is responsible for the overall management of the website, including administrative decisions that affect ownership, access, and configuration.
Depending on the website configuration and available features, the owner may be able to:
- Transfer ownership to another website user.
- Invite users to collaborate on the website.
- Remove users from the website.
- Assign or change website user roles.
- Manage website settings.
- Manage connected domains.
- Configure third-party integrations.
- Delete or restore the website.
- Manage subscription and billing settings, when available.
Some administrative permissions may also be available to users with the Administrator role. However, ownership-related actions always remain exclusive to the website owner.
Website ownership and user roles
Website ownership should not be confused with website user roles.
User roles determine what a collaborator is allowed to do while working on a website. Ownership identifies the account that has ultimate responsibility for the website itself.
For example, an Administrator may be able to manage website content and users, while only the website owner can transfer ownership to another person.
Can a website have multiple owners?
No. Each website has exactly one owner.
If responsibility for the website needs to change, ownership must be transferred to another eligible website user. Once the transfer is completed, the recipient becomes the new website owner.
What happens to the previous owner?
After an ownership transfer is completed, the previous owner no longer has ownership-specific permissions.
The previous owner may remain associated with the website as a regular website user, depending on the role and access assigned during the ownership transfer process.
Protecting your website ownership
Because the website owner has the highest level of control, ownership should always be protected carefully.
To help keep your website secure:
- Use a strong and unique password for your Art Schema account.
- Never share your login credentials with other people.
- Regularly review the users who have access to your website.
- Transfer ownership only to a person you trust.
- Confirm that the recipient’s email address and account are correct.
- Carefully review ownership transfer requests before verifying them.
Transferring website ownership
Art Schema provides a secure ownership transfer process that requires verification and acceptance before ownership is changed.
Starting an ownership transfer does not immediately change the website owner. The current owner must verify the request, and the intended recipient must accept the transfer before the process is completed.
Until the transfer is accepted, the current owner continues to own and control the website.
